Bollards at Hudson Street. These are precisely 5 feet (1.52 m) apart, as specified in the AASHTO guidelines: the length of my bicycle. The bollards constrict the path and can exclude larger motorized vehicles, though not snowmobiles, motor scooters, motorcycles or all-terrain vehicles. The photo was taken with flash, as the glare of the reflectorized signs in the background shows. The bollards are painted yellow but do not glare -- they are not reflectorized. They should be reflectorized to show up in the beams of bicycle headlamps. Many jurisdictions have taken to removing the bollards at the edges, or all bollards, finding that the hazard outweighs the benefit -- either warning signs are sufficient to discourage motorized users, or else they go around the bollards and enforcement is the only effective countermeasure.
